While You are Abroad

Going overseas takes a lot of effort and preparation, but the bulk of the work is behind you by the time you leave. Here are a few tips on enjoying a safe and successful exchange experience.

Your Safety Abroad

Your health, safety, and well-being while on an overseas exchange are of prime importance. Safety is largely a matter of common sense combined with knowledge of local conditions. Ask your host university exchange coordinator at the orientation session about any safety or health concerns you may have. They are your resource for any questions or concerns you may have throughout your exchange. Also refer to the following websites for travel reports, security, visas and health concerns for specific destinations, and weekly travel bulletins and warnings:

PLEASE NOTE:  Contact the IESS Office IMMEDIATELY whenever ANY emergency affecting your exchange experience occurs.

While Travelling

Keep all documents for entering your destination country with you at all times. You will be required to show your passport and visa before being allowed to board the aircraft, and again when you arrive at your destination. A passport or visa is of no use to you if it is packed in your checked baggage!

When You Arrive

Once you have arrived in your host country, follow any visitor registration procedures that may be required. As soon as possible after arrival, make arrangements for the secure storage of the travel documents you will not be using regularly.

Notify the international coordinator of your host institution when you arrive. You should expect to attend an orientation session. Keep your contact information (address, phone number, and e-mail address) up to date with both the host university and with UVic.

Prepare to Return to UVic

If you are planning to continue your studies at UVic following your overseas experience, you must register like other students. Basically, you will follow the same UVic registration schedule as if you were living in Victoria.

Don't forget to register for the term you will be attending at UVic when you return from your exchange. You will register via UVic Web registration. UVic Records will contact you via your UVic e-mail address as to the date and time of your course registration. You will receive this notification in May and registration occurs in late June and early July.
