Preparing for Classes

This page includes important things you should attend to as you prepare for the start of classes. Accomplishing these things in a timely manner will help your first term at UVic run smoothly.

Attend Orientation

New Student Orientation offers fun and informative programs for students starting at UVic during the winter session. The programs will give you exclusive access to important UVic services before classes begin. Have fun, build connections and ease your transition to a new campus, a new country and a new culture!

New international students are expected to attend the International Student Welcome. A variety of topics will be addressed, including immigration regulations, employment, health insurance, adjusting to a new culture and studying successfully in a new academic system. Participants will also have opportunities to connect with new and returning students from around the world.

Other orientation programs are offered for students living off campus, students living in residence, graduate students, transfer students, mature students and students with families. The New Student Orientation website outlines each of these orientation programs. Choose the ones that are right for you and register online.

TIP: If you arrive at UVic during the summer session, please drop by the IESS office. We will be happy to welcome you, answer your questions and provide you with an orientation package.

Explore the Campus

Being led on a tour is a great way to explore the campus and learn about UVic. Students who attend orientation programs will receive a campus tour. If you miss orientation, or you arrive during the summer session, sign up for a campus tour by phoning 250-721-8949 or emailing tours@uvic.ca.

Even after your campus tour, it will take a while to remember the location of every building and service at UVic. Students are welcome to drop by the Student Transition Centre, located in the Student Union Building, for information and assistance. Visit the Student Transition Centre website for hours of operation. The Maps and Buildingswebpage is also very helpful for finding your way around campus.

Get a Student ID Card

You are eligible to get your student ID card as soon as you have registered for courses. It is the required form of identification for all UVic students. Students who attend orientation programs will get their student ID cards without having to wait in a long lineup at the start of term. If you miss orientation, or you arrive during the summer session, go to the Photo ID Centre in the lobby of the University Centre Building to have your picture taken. Bring your student number and passport with you.

Your student ID card is intended for use throughout your full course of study at UVic. It is not replaced each year. However, you must have your card re-encoded at the start of each new session. Visit the Photo ID Centre webpage for more information. Your student ID card will serve as your library card, athletics and recreation pass, and universal bus pass (U-Pass). It will also serve as validation that you are a member of either the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) or the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS).

Access NetLink

A NetLink ID is a unique personal identifier which will allow you to access various systems and services at UVic, including student computer labs on campus and the library gateway. It will also allow you to access your free UVic email account and UVic’s portal system.

To sign up for a NetLink ID, go to the NetLink webpage and follow the step-by-step instructions. If you can not complete the application process, please contact the Computer Help Desk for assistance.

Finalize Your Schedule

Students are responsible for knowing their class schedule. Using Undergraduate WebView or Graduate WebView, you can access your timetable and check classroom locations for each of your courses. Courses are sometimes relocated to a different classroom at the last minute, so access WebView before you attend your first class.

If you do not attend the first week of classes, you may be dropped from your courses or you may lose your spot on waitlists. If you are not able to attend the first week of classes, you must contact your instructors to confirm your registration.

TIP: Movement on waitlists is very high during the first week of classes as students drop extra courses. If you are moved from the waitlist to registered status in a course, you will be notified via your UVic email account.

Do not assume that your instructor will drop you from a course if you do not attend the classes. You are responsible for adding and dropping courses using WebReg. Consult the UVic Calendar for important deadlines with regards to adding and dropping courses. You will be charged for all courses that are not dropped before the deadline, regardless of whether or not you attended the classes. You may also receive a failing grade.

Buy Course Materials

The UVic Bookstore stocks required and optional course materials for all UVic courses. Students who attend orientation programs will get to purchase their course materials without having to wait in a long lineup at the start of term.

The UVic Bookstore is located next to the UVic Bus Loop. When you go textbook shopping, take your list of courses including course codes and section numbers so you can cross check them with the textbook listings provided at the bookstore. Textbook listings are also available on the UVic Bookstore website three weeks prior to the beginning of each term.

You may want to wait until classes start before buying optional course materials. Instructors often put textbooks on hold in the library where you can access them for free. Keep your textbook receipts to exchange or get a refund, and do not open plastic wrapped books until you know for sure you will use them.

TIP: Used textbooks are also available on consignment at SUBText in the Student Union Building.

Pay Student Fees

Fee statements are not mailed to students. They are only available online using Undergraduate WebView or Graduate WebView. If you add or drop a course, allow 24 hours for your account to be updated.

There are deadlines each term for paying your student fees. Check for fee deadlines in the UVic Calendar, and be sure to pay on time. A penalty charge will be added for late payments. Failure to pay fees may also result in cancellation of course registration and denial of services.

You can make payments in person by cheque, money order, bank draft, debit card or cash. Some students also set up telephone or internet banking options. Student fee payments cannot be made by credit card. If you have any questions, visit the Accounting Services website for instructions and contact information.

Exchange students

You will pay tuition fees at your home institution. Contact your UVic exchange advisor for more information.
